Fuerteventura Tourist Tips

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, located off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. It's a popular holiday destination with the British, because of the year-round good weather and the tourist-friendly atmosphere.

Travelling light to Fuerteventura is a must, especially during April to November. During the winter months you may find you need a thin jumper and trousers of an evening; the rest of the time it's too hot for anything other than as little as possible. Fuerteventura gets rain occasionally but unless you plan on camping, waterproofs won't be necessary.

You may wish to take your own 'essential' foodstuffs - things like good quality English tea, Branston Pickle and even 'English' sausages are hard to come by. Everything else is readily available at supermarkets, and although they usually stock British brands you can save money if you buy the local brands instead.

Fuerteventura uses the two-pin circular plugs and adapters are available from most hardware stores in the UK. Some hotels may even provide them for the guests to use during their stay.

The water, although safe to drink, has a higher ph level and a slightly salty taste if drunk straight from the tap. The Ph level tends to be what causes 'Spanish Tummy', due to tourists drinking the local water when their constitutions aren't' used to it. It's fine for hot drinks and cleaning your teeth, but if you want fresh cold water you can buy large 5L bottles very cheaply.

Taxis tend to be quite cheap and plentiful. Don't be alarmed at the driving though, most Spanish drivers seem quite aggressive compared to the UK, but it's perfectly safe. If your Spanish isn't too good, have the name and address of your hotel or destination written down to show the driver.

Eating out in Fuerteventura gives you a choice of English, Spanish, Italian, and a mix of other cuisines to suit any taste. The predominant local food on the island is seafood, with fresh vegetables and fruit also featuring heavily. Being a Mediterranean cuisine it's very healthy, with lots of good oils to bring out flavour.

Shopping on the island can be confusing for a first-time visitor. The islanders, like most of Spain, observe a Siesta, this means that most cafes and shops are closed for 2 or 3 hours in the middle of the day while the sun is at it's hottest and highest. It's recommended that holidaymakers try to stay out of the sun at these times too, to reduce the risk of sunburn or heatstroke.

Siam Park Water Kingdom, Tenerife

A great day out for all the family when visiting Tenerife is the Siam Park Water Kingdom which is based on the ancient kingdom of Thailand. Opened in 2008, Siam Park is a fantastic theme park with great water attractions and is located in Playa de las Americas on the island of Tenerife. The park has a magnificent wave pool where the waves reach heights of over 3ft enabling you to ride the surf. The pool also has a lovely sandy beach with the water temperature at 24C.

Siam Beach offers wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean and the island of La Gomera. Here you will find The Beach Bar where you can enjoy a refreshing drink on the terrace and The Beach Club which offers a buffet with international cusine which you can eat on the terrace or on the beach.

The park has the Billabong Surf Shop and a floating market, built on a Thai Village theme, where you can enjoy a Thai massage and purchase souvenirs, refreshments, sun lotion, swimming attire and much much more.

ATTRACTIONS

The Tower of Power
In my opinion this is the best and most terrifying attraction here. After climbing to the top of the tower you plunge 92ft into an aquarium! A must for the thrill seekers.

The Dragon
Seated in a raft for up to 3 people, you will experience zero gravity when the raft enters a giant cone, spinning round and round until it is washed along to the end of the ride.

Mekong Rapids
This is a mad ride for all the family in family sized rafts along the rapids.

Naga Racer
Comprising of 6 lanes of running water, this is where all the family can grab a mat and have a race down to the bottom of the snakes.

Jungle Snakes
This consists of four entwinned snakes where you take a fast ride on a raft that slips and slides on the water through a mythical jungle.

The Giant
Another very popular ride where you will feel the force of gravity in a powerful twin cyclone.

The Volcano
Sitting in a dingy with 3 other people you will be transported through the darkened volcano as if you were caught in the lava flow until you reach the end.

The Lazy River (Mai Thai River)
For some relaxation you can take a ride on the long, gentle, lazy river which passes by an aquarium of tropical fish and magnificent waterfalls.

Discover the Beauty and the Beast on Cheap Holidays to Tenerife

The Canary Islands are a group of six small and seven larger islands, nestling just off the coast of north-west Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Tenerife is the largest and most populated of these islands and welcomes around five million tourists every year who take advantage of the many cheap holidays to Tenerife that are available, making it one of Spain's busiest and most popular holiday destinations.

Tenerife is essentially an island of two halves; the north and south are divided by the imposing Mount Teide, a volcano which can be seen from almost everywhere on the island, and in colder months is picturesquely tipped with snow, although you could still be wearing your swimsuit on the beach. The north of the island tends to be a bit cloudier and can sometimes see a little rain, while the south usually basks in year round sunshine.

Mount Teide is thought to derive its name from the Guanche language native to the Canary Islands up until the 16th or 17th century, and from where the word Echeyde, or Echeide is translated as 'hell', a reference to its early volcanic eruptions giving birth to the belief that the mountain was a portal in to a fiery underworld where the people of the island believe 'Guayota' the evil spirit lived.

Mount Teide is an active volcano although it hasn't erupted since 1909, and is Spain's highest peak; rising to 3,718m from its base, Teide is also accredited as being the third largest volcano by volume on the planet.

Standing proudly in the Mount Teide National Park, named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2007, it is one of Tenerife's major tourist attractions and four of the five million visitors to the island each year come here. Many serious hikers choose to climb the mountain on foot, but the going gets tough as the higher you climb the thinner the air gets. Most people choose the easier option and take the 'Teleferico Teide', or Mount Teide Cable Car to within 200m of the summit, a journey that takes just 8 minutes.

To reach the very top of the mountain you will need a special permit, pre-bookable from the National Park Offices in Santa Cruz, you can do this in person or by email a minimum of 8 days prior to your visit, the email address is; teide@oapn.mma.es, this enables you to climb to the very edge of the vast crater. Limiting the visitors protects this extremely fragile yet breathtakingly beautiful part of the world.

The crater itself spans an immense 16km with amazing rock formations and volcanic ash that gives the appearance of a lunar landscape; a barren outlook which has been used as a backdrop in films such as Planet of the Apes and Star Wars. Be warned though that although it hasn't erupted in a hundred years, the volcano regularly belches wisps of sulfur in to the warm sunny air, a smell that takes some getting used to...
